Charter Schools
Newsweek magazine recently came out with their list of the top 100 public high schools in America. It seems that 3 of the schools are here in Massachusetts and all are charter schools. To refresh your memories, about 15 years ago the Commonwealth Of Massachusetts enacted legislation for the establishment of these schools as an optional form of public education. They manage their own budgets, curriculum and teaching staff but otherwise must meet the same educational requirements as traditional public schools. The number 1 public school in Massachusetts according to Newsweek is the Sturgis School in Hyannis. Of course the number 1 Wahey school is the Lighthouse School in Orleans which is a middle school and one of the original charter schools still going strong.

Thank you, Stan! Although I think that those ranking formulae are a bit dubious, I have no doubt that the charter school movement has brought crucial elements of innovation and choice to the public school world.
