The 15th Wahey Golf Tournament
It was determined that the Wahey Boys started heading up north to play golf in 1982. Can you believe it's been 27 years? It was also determined that although the first golf tournament was 1982, we skipped a few years. So I guess we'll call this the fifteenth year that we have "annually" gone up to the "Live Free Or Die" state to play golf. Stanley drove up and enjoyed not having to wear a seat belt all week-end (there is no seat belt law in New Hampshire). He was very excited to try out the new golf clubs and had been actually getting in quite a bit of practice under the tutelage of Killer, but his enthusiasm quickly waned after hitting several shots into the woods.
Stan tried in vain to institute a new scoring format that would allow for all the golfers to feel more involved in the competition. He went so far as to present new score cards to make scoring easier, but to no avail as the majority, always fearful of change and having to use arithmetic, ruled against it.
There were a few " firsts" this year. The tournament, which is usually held in September, was moved to October and unfortunately, everyone's fears that weather would be a detriment were confirmed when heavy rains fell all day Saturday and golf was canceled. Also, the Boys were joined by long time Wahey friend, T-bird. As someone who understands their strange sense of humor and musical tastes, he fit right in and hopefully enjoyed himself enough to make the trip again next year. Stan was certainly glad to have him on his team for Friday's golf. Vic, the tournament organizer, made the controversial decision to put all the worst golfers on one team this year, for the first time and wound up regretting it. The team of Stan, T-bird, Pablo and Bender were heavy underdogs but surprised everyone with a one over-par round on Friday and ended up being crowned this year's champions when Saturday's round was canceled. The obvious favorites, BO, Vic and Zig came in last place.
As usual Chef Ziggy did a wonderful job with the food again this year, serving spagetti with home-made tomato sauce, meatballs (also known as balls of meat) and sausage. The desert was whoopi pies and cookies, all made by the fabulous Jude. Very tasty.
A few other highlights:
- The Edmund Fitzgerald sailed by closer than in previous years, allowing for the passengers to hear the annual Wahey Serenade.
- T-bird brought with him some old CYO and little league pictures of the Waheys that were good for some laughs.
- Mule was presented with a card and some home grown vegetables for Queen Laurie to let her know our prayers are with her.
- Mule and Stan splitting the DJ duties and the subsequent "deal with the devil".
- The "Big Sneaker" and resultant charitable foundation.
- John Lincoln Wright sung in french.
- The "Balls Of Meat" song.
- The drenching of Ernie.
- The "Paper-Bag Of Brownies" story.
