Spain Politics

That's Spain, the family not the country, where politics is not unlike it is in Massachusetts. Males versus females is split 50-50 and voter apathy is at 50%. My son has much to say about politics yet never votes and "thinks" he doesn't care. I'm pretty sure he's a liberal which is why I keep encouraging him to get involved. Naturally, he will never listen to me, so I may have to change my approach to him. I'm quite sure he will not vote on Tuesday, January 19. My daughter lives in Washington D.C. and thinks she does care. She's much more the free thinker, refusing to acknowledge that she takes any advice from anyone, least of all me. She doesn't vote so far as I am aware and if she did, may just as well vote for Scott Brown but tell you she voted for Martha Coakley. My only leverage to insure a Democratic vote is through her boyfriend, who I have evidenced is a die hard Ted Kennedy fan. I would be surprised if he didn't vote although he would need to use an absentee ballot form which would require some effort and might be a deterrent.

My wife always votes but has learned after 27 years of marriage not to disclose to me who she votes for. I think she is leaning toward Scott Brown because he is good looking (a former model) and somewhat related (her brother is married to Gail Huff's sister). Her brother, living in California (go figure) has sent out a blanket e-mail requesting the family support Senator Brown. Blood is often thicker than water, but I keep talking up Coakley.

Old Stanley is solidly behind Martha Coakley who has always shown that she is has worked hard as Attorney General battling for the people of Massachusetts, particularly against the many indiscretions of the insurance industry, a personal pet-peeve of mine. The major issue for me is that she will vote for the federal health care reform bill which is based on the Massachusetts plan and will help solidify it by putting some of the financial burden of it on the federal government. She is against the death penalty and for letting anyone who wants to marry, do it legally and receive the benefits that go along with it. I also respect the fact that she has come out against the President's plan to send more troops to Afghanistan.

Scott Brown believes in the death penalty, same sex marriage and sending troops into the war all while touting that he is a Lt. Colonel in the National Guard. The hypocrisy is that he is a lawyer that gives estate planning advice to other Guard members, earning money while doing it, and has never been to Afghanistan, Iraq or any war. He once received an accommodation for helping with home security as part of his National Guard duties during 9/11, yet voted against providing financial assistance to those who actually went to New York and volunteered during rescue and recovery efforts of that tragedy. My biggest problem with Scott Brown is the health reform bill. He has made it known he will vote against it which is no surprise because he votes as he is told to vote by his superiors. His record is clear on that. This despite voting for the similar Massachusetts plan, when it was in his best interest to do so. It is bothersome that a man can vote against something that will provide a necessary quality of life benefit to everyone and vote for allowing extravagant bonuses to the inept executives of Wall Street.

Please vote for Martha Coakley on January 19.
