Honor Among Enemies

Look carefully at the B-17 and note how shot up it is - one engine dead, tail, horizontal stabilizer and nose shot up.. It was ready to fall out of the sky. (This is a painting done by an artist from the description of both pilots many years later.) Then realize that there is a German ME-109 fighter flying next to it. Now go to the link below and read the story. I think you'll be surprised.....

The American Flag In Texas

I was feeling proud of myself this past weekend. I was up early and attended a couple of Memorial Day ceremonies at a World War II and Korean War memorial and then went to the parade in Weymouth. I even stayed for the ceremony afterwards at the Ralph Talbot Amphitheater adjacent to the Weymouth Town Hall. The weather was perfect and although I thought the turnout was weak for such a beautiful day there were plenty of people in attendence. Afterwards, I visited my grandparents graves and noticed quite a few other people attending to grave sites and some just sitting and remembering. It felt good to see that so many Americans realize the importance of Memorial Day.

Save Legion Field

I’d like to share a little history about Legion Memorial Field with you, especially in light of the recent Memorial Day ceremony at the Ralph Talbot Amphitheater.

The Luckiest Generation

The generation of men and women who experienced The Great Depression as children, went on to fight in World War II, and then came home to rebuild America after that war, has often been referred to as the Greatest Generation. No one can argue that the contribution and sacrifice this generation made for their offspring was tremendous. That being said, the generation that comprises the Wahey Boys, sometimes called Generation Jones, I like to call the Luckiest Generation.

Texting While Driving The Budget

Senator Steven Baddour, the Senate chair of the Legislature’s Joint Committee on Transportation was recently quoted “This generation clearly doesn’t get it. It’s not the same as talking on a cell phone.”, while discussing the Senate’s reasoning for including a “budget” amendment that would ban writing and reading text messages while behind the wheel. Well guess “what’s up” Mr. Senator, you and your colleagues “clearly don’t get it” because talking on the cell phone IS the same thing as texting. Sure, we can all go through the semantics by stating that you obviously have to look away from the “task at hand”, driving, in order to text, but let’s be realistic they’re both distractions. Quite frankly, the Senator’s quote is the best argument yet, for NOT imposing a ban at all.

O'Sullivan Park Vandalism

The Wahey Boys are beside themselves. How does this happen? This is like knocking over headstones at the cemetery. Only morons do it. This isn't like punching a cow in the forehead.

Hollywood Squares

You're not a Wahey Boy if you can't remember Hollywood Squares.

These great questions and answers are from the days when Hollywood Squares game show responses were spontaneous, not scripted, as they are now. Peter Marshall was the host asking the questions, of course..

Council Backs Civil Service

Town Councilor Kevin Whitaker and his committee did their homework and suggested that the position of Chief Of Police in Weymouth should remain a Civil Service appointment.

Bigot

One who is strongly partial to one's own group, religion, race, or politics and is intolerant of those who differ. The Wahey Boys are big on education.

One only needs to read some of the commentary contained on this web site to see that the underlying message is that education supersedes policy-making. Our belief is that, in most instances, bad behavior has been learned and can only be corrected by teaching proper behavior. Call us bigots if you want.

Who Cares?

It was reported recently that the Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy had decided to drop the name “Crusaders” for the more politically correct “Lions” as a team mascot name.

Tell Us Something We Don't Know

Everybody knows recycling is a good thing. But it’s work and some of us feel we’re wasting our time recycling when we read that what we put in the recycle bin only ends up in the trash heap anyway. And it does, no question about it, when the recycling market is down or “flush”, and communities have no place to put recyclables, they go to the trash with everything else.

Fundraising At The Ninety Nine

I'm confused! Nothing new. Here's the question for you fundraising at the liquor store experts. Today, students replete with their Weymouth garb, are having a car wash at the Ninety-Nine Restaurant on Route 18. Now we've seen this before. No big deal, right? Sometimes, the girls have bathing suits on. Sometimes the guys have their shirts off. They wave signs at the cars whizzing by and jump up and down to avert drivers to see them. It's all good, as they say, because they're trying to attract attention to raise money for their cause. There's no danger here, right? The school committee, the Superintendent, the Mayor, signed off on this, right? They can't get hit by a car, right? The manager can't slip a drink to a girl in a bikini, right? But let's keep them away from the Packy, because that will contribute to their deliquency.

I'm still confused. Nothing new.

So, You Want To Drive A Trolley?

I sat down with my 20 year old son last night to discuss a whole litany of important subjects none of which need to be delved into here. Throughout the first twenty or so minutes of our conversation his cell phone had interrupted us no less than six times until finally, with remarkable restraint, I removed it from the equation.

The Dog Peed On The Floor

Because there’s no more newspaper. Where did it go? It has gone the way of the Ivory-Billed Woodpecker.

Well, not yet, but close. As the Boston Globe struggles to survive while other newspapers around the country are failing, the under-age-40 generation (I’m guessing) is saying, “so what”.

Remdawg Is Sick

As I'm sure all the Wahey baseball nuts already know, everybody's favorite, Jerry Remy had a touch of cancer on his lung and his absence from the games has been connected with recovering from that. This is his blog account of the ordeal and if you click here you can read a Boston Globe article submitted by Vic just short time ago. Anyone who follows the Sox know what a great job he does, but it is painfully obvious, with all due respect to his fill-ins, that his presence is needed in the booth with Don Orsillo.

Weymouth News Rebuttal

Last week, the Weymouth News came out with an editorial to “Can Canning In Front Of Liquor Stores”. The article basically sided with the minority of people who feel that town government should set restrictions on how parents raise their children, which is the hidden issue in the discussion of fundraising at liquor stores. One of our Wahey Boys, submitted a rebuttal that he had hoped would be printed this week but it conveniently missed the print deadline even though the canning policy had already lost. Interesting that this newspaper prints articles on old national topics such as Bush-Cheney labeled “Free Speech” but ignores controversial local topics such as this. Regardless, we’ve printed it here on www.waheyboys.com because we’re FREE to do so.

The Negative Side Of Helping Children

“What could possibly be negative about helping children?” is the question Mayor Sue Kay asked the Weymouth School Committee recently. The question, standing alone, will most assuredly get a “nothing” answer, but when mixed with politics, be careful. In this case we revisit our most popular subject lately, the “canning in front of liquor stores debate”.

Mr. Right And Mr. Left

Mr. Right (Har) and Mr. Left (Stan) of the Wahey Boys are in disagreement, again. “I’m not recycling any more”. “I’m sick of it and it’s a government plot to create jobs for immigrants” Mr. Right says, then adds, “and besides that, it hurts the environment more than helps, and most of what is recycled goes to the landfill anyway.” “Look into it” he challenges Mr. Left.

Frivolity And Economy

Want to hear something funny? There’s this product called the “Off Road Commode”, which is an actual toilet seat that attaches to the trailer hitch of a vehicle. I guess it’s made for those outdoorsman types. But that’s not the funny part. This product comes with a warning label that states the product “shouldn’t be used while the VEHICLE IS MOVING”.

Setting The Wrong Policy

Yet we can maintain a free society only if we recognize that in a free society no one can win all the time. No one can have his own way all the time, and no one is right all the time. -Richard Nixon

The Wahey Boys like to call them the “micro-policy makers”, as those who feel there needs to be a rule for every facet of life; a few more shots across the bow on the “canning in front of liquor stores” debate.
