Canning Again

The Weymouth School Committee, in their zeal for setting unnecessary rules, has approved a policy that will not allow students to wear their school uniforms or colors unless it is approved by the Superintendent Of Schools. Although we’re not sure, we thought that was basically the policy already. It appears that the lesson to be learned here is, “don’t give up no matter how wrong you’re proven to be”. It seems that this policy is merely an attempt to appease a vocal minority. Bravo to the lone dissenter, Karen Berry who opted for parental freedom. Let’s review the entire issue of fundraising.

Don't Play To Win

Shame on the Weymouth Babe Ruth and JBL (Junior Basketball League) coaches that promote an exclusionary “We Play To Win” youth sports mentality. When articles appear praising Babe Ruth All-Star teams for District Tournament victories, or travel basketball teams for playoff wins, left out is the fact that there are players in each program that aren’t allowed to participate in the fun because the coaches don’t think they’re good enough.

Old Enough To Strip

I found it quite perplexing that the Patriot Ledger's articles recently, regarding an underage rock band playing at a venue that serves alcohol, received more comments than some of their reports on important issues such as health care. It makes you wonder what the mind-set of America is. Down in Atlanta they recently passed an ordinance preventing anyone under the age of 21 from entering an establishment that serves alcohol. I guess that would take care of underage rock-stars,or maybe not. There is no law preventing persons under 21 from working in these places. Now a group of young strippers are suing because they are being prevented from doing their jobs.

Aren't there more important things to worry about?

Another Opinion On Basta Bar

In response to the recent article regarding the 11 year old Barroom Heroes (and what's with that name?) playing at Bastas, it's hard to know who sounds more misguided, the owner, obviously seeking to groom future patrons, or the parents of the children, apparently seeking some sort of twisted American Idol moment.. In order to avoid being adults and telling these kids, "No!," in the first place, they instead compare the historically notorious Basta's to family restaraunts, Fenway Park, and weddings. No wedding or ballgame I've been to recently has a stripper pole on the dance floor, half naked bartenders (not that there's anything wrong with that), or booze-filled "shot machines" at the bar to promote alcohol abuse. Snap out of it, people, and let the kids rock out at a more suitable venue.

What Would Mary Do?

I didn’t have the pleasure of meeting Mary Toomey but one of the advantages of a lifetime of hard work is leaving behind a legacy of accomplishments. One of her greater accomplishments is the Abigail Adams State Park and looking up the history of this property you will inevitably come across Mary’s name and come to understand the hard work she put into the renovation of this parcel of land on the banks of the Back River.

My Father's Day Wish

If Stan's Father's Day wish was a movie it would be rated "R", and it is not politically correct, so don't click the link if you're easily offended.

The Ephemeral Pool

How ironic is that? It appears we had it all wrong these past 80 years. All those historic Maroon and Gold high school sports teams and graduations were all just a temporary replacement for Legion Field’s real purpose.

Southfield Movie Studio

News broke yesterday that the long anticipated movie studio project at Southfield (the former South Weymouth Navy Base) looks like it is moving forward. This is great news for Weymouth and for Massachusetts. We have often referred to Southfield as the Twilight Zone because of it’s beautiful façade, off of Route 18, that basically leads to nowhere. In the ten years since the Air Station closed there has been “much ado about nothing” there and certainly no revenue generated for the surrounding communities.

The Basta Bar

The Basta Bar in Weymouth, the scene of the now infamous crime of “underage singing”, has been in the news quite often over the past few years and may be “inappropriate” as Weymouth Police Officer Brian King put it; in reference to the young rockers plying their trade at the establishment. If it is indeed inappropriate, then it is inappropriate for everyone and perhaps Officer King should take that into consideration while doing his job as licensing officer. When it comes to children playing music however, Officer King and the Weymouth Police clearly are not doing their job, they are stepping into the realm of parenting, the toughest job on earth.

Charter Schools

Newsweek magazine recently came out with their list of the top 100 public schools in America. It seems that 3 of the schools are here in Massachusetts and all are charter schools. To refresh your memories, about 15 years ago the Commonwealth Of Massachusetts enacted legislation for the establishment of these schools as an optional form of public education. They manage their own budgets, curriculum and teaching staff but otherwise must meet the same educational requirements as traditional public schools. The number 1 public school in Massachusetts according to Newsweek is the Sturgis School in Hyannis. Of course the number 1 Wahey school is the Lighthouse School in Orleans which is one of the original charter schools still going strong.

Barroom Heroes

Have you heard about the investigation? Yes, there was an investigation into a band of hoodlums congregating at the infamous Basta Bar in Weymouth. Not to worry though, Officer Brian King of Weymouth’s finest is on the case.

Take Time To Teach

I just commented in disagreement on a local story about a school committee instituting a ban on high caffeine power drinks. It’s crazy how our children are raised these days, all in the name of “what’s best for them”. Parents are taking the term over protection to new levels and adults in general feel they are “all-knowing” when it comes to what’s best for children.

Jake O'Brien

I'm no talent scout but I do know a little bit about basketball. There's a kid who grew up around the corner and is entering his sophomore year at Boston University that's real good. He was the American East Rookie Of The Year last year and as he continues to fill out his 6"-8" frame can only get better. There was concern that he wasn't returning to the Terriers this year but lucky for them that has changed. If you follow college basketball or local kids making good then you'll want to keep an eye out for him and the B.U. Terriers.

More Cell Phone Talk

Today, our Massachusetts legislators are debating how severe of a cell phone ban should be enacted into law. Rest assured law-lovers, that there will be at least a ban on texting while driving. This debate has been going on publicly for a while now and really heated up when the “child in a man’s body”, working as a trolley driver for the MBTA, smashed into the trolley ahead of him. This man-child with a cell phone fettish became the scape goat for the T's inept hiring and training practices and it worked like a chiming cell ringer as everyone focused on the texting issue rather than the real problem.

I Hate Insurance

This is a long boring story but one that I hope you’ll read because it is also an example of what’s wrong with insurance, particularly health care in this country. In fact anything to do with insurance is boring which is why most people don’t pay any attention to it or try to educate themselves about how it works. Most middle class people, myself included, simply take for granted that insurance is a necessity of life in America and pay whatever the cost is and hope that they never need it.

LST-376

Much will be said today, and rightly so, about those that stormed the beaches of Normandy, France on this day 65 years ago. We will read sad stories and heroic stories that will be all over the news. I thought it would be fitting to recognize a single ship that I'm sure no stories will be written about but is an example of the many unrecognized heroes of the D-Day Invasion and the war effort overall. The ship pictured is LST-376 which was built at the Quincy Shipyard.

Senior Drivers

I have been expounding recently to anyone willing to listen about the “texting while driving” debate. I’m one of those people who generally don’t like laws of any kind that infringe on personal freedom so I applaud the Patriot Ledger for their opinion column “New Law Not Answer To Texting While Driving”. I like to think that education, not dictation, is the way to change attitudes.

Start Worrying

There is nothing as deceptive as an obvious fact. — Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Time is an independent measuring device that cannot be reversed, slowed down nor sped up, yet anyone with children would agree that twenty years goes by in a flash. When my son went off to college I told him that four years really wasn’t a long time. He didn’t agree, for him, it was an eternity away. My father thinks that it was only yesterday that the federal government came to Weymouth and took a large chunk of land and turned it into an Air Station. He says some people probably got paid, but for the most part they took what they wanted and used it for about 50 years and now they want big bucks to sell it back to us.
