Don't Wave At Children

I came across this story and it reminded me of an incident involving our own Wahey Boy, Vic, that occurred just about a month ago. The events are eerily similar and we're hoping that this isn't some over-the-top trend by law enforcement. In this case the Royal Canadian Mounted Police actually took an elderly couple into custody for waving hello to a child.

Soupy

I was never a Soupy Sales fan so I didn't take much notice when he passed away recently. I came across this essay by someone who is a fan. The article isn't so much about Soupy as it is about a couple of other things, 1) how times have changed for the worse when it comes to over protectiveness, and 2) how random acts of kindness can have a lasting effect on a person.

Egg Me

I just got in from buying a bunch of candy for Halloween. Of course, I always buy way too much for a couple of reasons. Number one, I eat more than I give out every year, which is also why I don't buy it too far ahead of time; and number two reason for over-buying is that there will be plenty left over to eat after Halloween. The sad part is that I don't actually end up buying a whole lot of candy anyway because not many kids go Treat R Treating anymore. That is a result of the far reaching affects of the "Nannying" phenomena better known as "parents know best and therefore ruin everything". You know, kind of like the organized sports our kids play nowadays.

Canning Again

The Weymouth School Committee, in their zeal for setting unnecessary rules, has approved a policy that will not allow students to wear their school uniforms or colors unless it is approved by the Superintendent Of Schools. Although we’re not sure, we thought that was basically the policy already. It appears that the lesson to be learned here is, “don’t give up no matter how wrong you’re proven to be”. It seems that this policy is merely an attempt to appease a vocal minority. Bravo to the lone dissenter, Karen Berry who opted for parental freedom. Let’s review the entire issue of fundraising.

Old Enough To Strip

I found it quite perplexing that the Patriot Ledger's articles recently, regarding an underage rock band playing at a venue that serves alcohol, received more comments than some of their reports on important issues such as health care. It makes you wonder what the mind-set of America is. Down in Atlanta they recently passed an ordinance preventing anyone under the age of 21 from entering an establishment that serves alcohol. I guess that would take care of underage rock-stars,or maybe not. There is no law preventing persons under 21 from working in these places. Now a group of young strippers are suing because they are being prevented from doing their jobs.

Aren't there more important things to worry about?

Another Opinion On Basta Bar

In response to the recent article regarding the 11 year old Barroom Heroes (and what's with that name?) playing at Bastas, it's hard to know who sounds more misguided, the owner, obviously seeking to groom future patrons, or the parents of the children, apparently seeking some sort of twisted American Idol moment.. In order to avoid being adults and telling these kids, "No!," in the first place, they instead compare the historically notorious Basta's to family restaraunts, Fenway Park, and weddings. No wedding or ballgame I've been to recently has a stripper pole on the dance floor, half naked bartenders (not that there's anything wrong with that), or booze-filled "shot machines" at the bar to promote alcohol abuse. Snap out of it, people, and let the kids rock out at a more suitable venue.

The Basta Bar

The Basta Bar in Weymouth, the scene of the now infamous crime of “underage singing”, has been in the news quite often over the past few years and may be “inappropriate” as Weymouth Police Officer Brian King put it; in reference to the young rockers plying their trade at the establishment. If it is indeed inappropriate, then it is inappropriate for everyone and perhaps Officer King should take that into consideration while doing his job as licensing officer. When it comes to children playing music however, Officer King and the Weymouth Police clearly are not doing their job, they are stepping into the realm of parenting, the toughest job on earth.

Barroom Heroes

Have you heard about the investigation? Yes, there was an investigation into a band of hoodlums congregating at the infamous Basta Bar in Weymouth. Not to worry though, Officer Brian King of Weymouth’s finest is on the case.

Take Time To Teach

I just commented in disagreement on a local story about a school committee instituting a ban on high caffeine power drinks. It’s crazy how our children are raised these days, all in the name of “what’s best for them”. Parents are taking the term over protection to new levels and adults in general feel they are “all-knowing” when it comes to what’s best for children.
