The Real Picture

As summer winds down and youth sports leagues close out their seasons, sports pages for the local newspapers will have more than a few “feel-good” stories and pictures of children and their “successful” teams. Coaches will issue the standard quotes of how the “win” wasn’t as important as having fun and how teaching good sportsmanship is the ultimate goal, and all the kids will be huddled together smiling with their trophies. And of course, there are the parents, beaming over their child’s achievement, telling all who will listen how hard work and perseverance paid off.

Don't Play To Win

Shame on the Weymouth Babe Ruth and JBL (Junior Basketball League) coaches that promote an exclusionary “We Play To Win” youth sports mentality. When articles appear praising Babe Ruth All-Star teams for District Tournament victories, or travel basketball teams for playoff wins, left out is the fact that there are players in each program that aren’t allowed to participate in the fun because the coaches don’t think they’re good enough.

Raiders Suck

Its baseball season and the Sox are beating up the Yankees this weekend. The Celtics are playing tough in the playoffs despite losing KG and the B's look better than they have in years, and everything’s right in the world. It’s too early to be chanting “Yankees Suck” and it’s way too early to be thinking football, but with the NFL Draft going on, I couldn’t help noticing something today.

Street Hockey

I was laying in bed looking up at Yaz and closed my eyes for a moment. “Please Yaz, this is a very important day for me.” I heard Sid, The Jarhead’s footsteps on the stairs and jumped up to quickly pull the bedspread taught. Sid opened the door and scanned the room. “Alright, go ahead”, he said, “but be back when the street lights come on.”

Boston Sports Comes Full Circle

Last week I was on one of my new favorite blog-sites and clicked on this. I think I got something in my eye. I had never seen this add before. There are sports legends that define our lives. Probably like many from the Boston area, mine are Yaz, Orr, Bird and Brady. What a great sports town.
