Our Small Town

As a life-long resident of Weymouth, I’m fearful that my town is slowly becoming another victim of urban sprawl, where long time residents become displaced by those with no connection to their home’s history and people. Ten years ago, Weymouth officially made the transition from a town meeting form of government to a city, complete with a mayor and town council. The change was painful for us “townies” but at least we were able to keep the name “Town” of Weymouth as our formal identity. When you’re part of a small town, everyone is connected, or feels connected, to each other and to the much larger events that have shaped our country and the world.

Russ MacNeil's Corner

Not too many Americans remembered the United States Navy had a birthday this month. Our armed services, and the men and women who fight to preserve our freedom around the globe and at home are often taken for granted. As this birthday passes and the Marine Corps birthday and Veterans Day approaches, we should all stop to think about not only our military, but all our protectors; those who have put aside some or all of their lives so that others can be safe and free, whether in the military, law enforcement, firefighting or nursing.

God Speaks

"Each of us is merely a small instrument; all of us, after accomplishing our mission, will disappear."
—
Mother Teresa (In the Heart of the World: Thoughts, Stories and Prayers)

On a recent visit to Washington D.C., while looking over a map of the multitude of memorials, museums and history there, I noticed a fairly new cenotaph located in Judiciary Square. It is called the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial and although I hadn’t initially planned on seeing it, I am glad I did. My satisfaction wasn’t just in seeing such a splendid monument, but for the spiritual experience I was surprised with as well. I have never been accused of being overly religious, but on this day I received a message from God.

Meeting Paula Jackson

When the time comes to say good bye to an old friend it’s only natural to reflect back on the snap shots of your life and pick out your favorites. One of the pictures, or videos in my mind that I returned to yesterday was the first time I actually met Paula Jackson because it made me smile on a day when many cried.

Memorial Day

We’re a forgetful bunch, we the free that is; those of us that escaped the cruelty of war. Oh sure, there are plenty of us that remember those that died for us. Some of us, especially those that war has touched personally, probably remember too much and try to forget, and can’t. Then there are those that are oblivious to what Memorial Day is all about. How many of us will raise a nice cold beverage to our lips this weekend and remember that others have died for us, and still do? How many of us will be too busy this weekend to clean up a fallen hero’s grave because we want our own slice of freedom to be manicured.

When The Levee Breaks

If you’re old enough to remember listening to Led Zeppelin’s new song, “When The Levee Breaks”, then you might remember when the citizens of Massachusetts staged a tax revolt in the form of a petition that would restrict the revenues cities and towns could collect through a property tax levy. Up until that time local governing bodies of the Commonwealth could levy whatever tax they felt was necessary to raise revenues that would cover the cost of running their municipalities.

Trash Or Tomorrows

I'm posting this video. I hope the authors don't mind, whoever they are. Whether you agree or not with the message, the video is well done and puts into perspective the budget problems facing the Town Of Weymouth. Parents are understandably upset that it appears the school system will be taking the brunt of the fiscal beating the town will take in FY-2011.

Weymouth's Budget Crisis

I know, I know, I've been slowing down on the blog. Hey, I'm busy with other stuff and that's a good thing, trust me. We have a full house again for the first time in a few months after another marathon drive to Washington D.C. and back to get my little princess and bring her home to cash strapped Weymouth.

Simple Math

At the beginning of this past fiscal year, FY 2010, as it is referred to at the Town Hall, Mayor Sue Kay was quick to point out that it was her second year of presenting a balanced budget. She was able to do this with the help of two very important events.

Second Place

Congratulations should be extended to the United States Hockey Team that won the Silver Medal in the recent Olympic Games held in Vancouver, Canada. Unfortunately, as the Games fade further and further into history, eventually only historians and statisticians will remember their feat. It’s easy to remember those that come in first, while second and third place finishers are more quickly forgotten. Any marginal hockey fan could tell you who won the 1980 Olympic Hockey Gold Medal but would be hard pressed to tell you who got the Silver.

Don Kent

Don Kent

Famous Weymouth guy, Don Kent passed away recently. He lived for many years on the Fore River side of Great Hill overlooking Wessagusset. His brother, the former owner of Kent's Carpetland still lives in Weymouth as well as some of Don's children. He was the original weather-man, getting his start forecasting on the radio for free.

Leo X

I flew back to Boston today, from sunny and 70 to rainy and 30, but that's nothing new to anybody from up here. I came across this article in the Weymouth News about our old friend Leo Crowley, Dave's Dad. Anyone who ever spent any time at the St. Jerome Church knows Leo. I'm guessing he's mid eighty's by now and still living next to Julia, and still playing golf from what I hear. The party will be April 9 at the Marriott in Quincy from 7 to midnight. I'm sure there will be lots of Weymouth people and lots of fun for a great guy. Hard to beleive Dave D is his son. Well, I guess he turned out okay too.

I almost forgot. How could my year end review not include our little go around regarding the Basta Bar and the Barroom Heroes. Weymouth Athletic Fields

You only need to be a parent to recognize the need for more and better athletic fields in the Town Of Weymouth. The two soccer fields located behind Ralph Talbot School are an example. No more than a few years old, they have already been over-used to the point that they have become hazardous. Youth football and lacrosse programs have difficulty every year securing fields. The high school football program recently had to play “home games” out of town because Weymouth’s only football field could not be used. Steve Reilly, the President of Weymouth Youth Soccer, has a good idea, and that is to form a non-profit company that will raise funds for the renovation of, in his case, Riley Field. It’s a good idea because a non-profit company can help relieve the burden of field maintenance from cash strapped cities and towns.

Oak Street

Oak Street was a nice tree lined road in 1964. I lived at number 41. The house had been my grandmother’s, Ellen, before my mother and father got married and moved in. Her husband, Algot, had died a few years prior to that and she probably would have lost the house if my parents hadn’t moved there.

Columbian Square Traffic

All you Waheys that have strayed from the plantation are often surprised when you come to South Weymouth for a visit, at the traffic problem in Columbian Square. For those of us living nearby, it's not new, but certainly getting worse as each year passes. The traffic is particularly frustrating during rush hours, in the morning and afternoon and most of it comes from the hospital. The South Shore Hospital is the largest employer around and continues to grow in leaps and bounds, which is a good thing.

Honor Our War Veterans

It seems as though everything our Presidents do nowadays is scrutinized. President Barack Obama was recently shown saluting the remains of our most recent casualties of war as they were transferred from a plane in Delaware, headed for their final resting places around the country. This President’s more public display of honoring our fallen heroes is in contrast to his predecessor’s more private show of respect. Each man has been criticized because of it. What is lost in the debate, as Veteran’s Day approaches, is that there are still young people dying in conflicts being fought all over the globe, 90 years after the conclusion of the “War To End All Wars”. Thankfully, towns such as Weymouth do not allow us to forget those boys and girls. Numerous sign posts and memorials throughout the town bearing the names of thousands of veterans, each with a unique story, remind us that there are those among us, even today, who gave a portion or all of their lives for the betterment of the United States.

William L. Concannon

There are many teachers on the Wahey Boys list of individuals that made an impact in our lives for various reasons. Certainly we all have a story involving Mr. Concannon. Whether the "good cop, bad cop routine" between Mr. Concannon and Buzzy Knight was planned or not, we'll probably never know. Suffice it say, if you wound up with "Conc", you knew the punishment would be painful and memorable.

Six Degrees Of Fran MacFawn

When you grow up in a town like Weymouth, Massachusetts, and stay there, you get to see firsthand, the changes, good and bad, that come over time. A few years ago, the “Town” Of Weymouth decided to change their form of government to a more “city-like” format that reflected the community’s growth and needs. I was largely unconcerned with what course the town took governmentally, but I did have a feeling that Weymouth was losing its small town charm. Weymouth has probably never been considered a small town, as town charm goes, but it had always felt like a town where everyone knows somebody, that knows somebody else. In recent years however, as more of my friends headed for rural digs, I found myself feeling a bit “left behind” and just when I thought that Weymouth was heading towards interminable urban aloofness I have reacquainted with friendly Fran MacFawn.

Weymouth 2009 Election

Congratulations to the winners of the local election today.

In the School Committee race incumbent Diana Flemer was the apparent winner and top vote getter with 3014 votes. The two other vacated seats will be filled by Gerald Murphy with 2804 votes and Lisa Belmarsh with 2416 votes.

In the Town Counciler At Large race all the incumbents were re-elected. Linda MacDonald made a good run at Kevin Whitaker, missing out at unseating him by a mere 160 votes. Mike Molisse unsurprisingly was the top vote getter followed by Brian McDonald.

Originality

There was a time, back in the early eighties, when all things original ceased to exist. We can't pinpoint the exact moment, but it was sometime after the Wahey Boys played their last basketball game, as a team. The setting was the old Weymouth South High School outdoor basketball courts and they vied for the Park League Championship. Throughout that short summer season, teams with names like Wildcats and Celtics competed on the asphalt court, and as each team eliminated another, it came down to two, as it always does.

Hey Teacher-My Arm Is Broken

John Keller is a sharp witted political analyst on WBZ-TV4 that I enjoy following. He has a blog and offers commentary about happenings and people that he finds well, stupid, called the Stooge Of The Week. The reason I mention this is because I was prepared to nominate the nurse at the Wessugusset Primary School in Weymouth. I’m not sure whether Mr. Keller even allows nominations and as it turns out he’s off this week celebrating his 30th wedding anniversary. So I guess I’ll just make her my Stooge Of The Week.

Getting Creative With Underage Drinkers

We here in Wahey-land have been critical in the past of the no tolerance approach that many take to curb underage alcohol and drug use. Most recently the School Committee in Weymouth voted to maintain a strict policy aimed at students caught with alcohol in lieu of a more lenient rule that was suggested by the high school principle, among others.

Where Are The Responsible Employers?

Greg Beeman, President of the Massachusetts Chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors recently wrote into the Weymouth News to criticize the town’s Responsible Employer Ordinance. It appears that the Fogg Library Project will be delayed because contractors have difficulty complying with Weymouth’s Responsible Employer Ordinance just as the Water Treatment Plant Project is now behind schedule for the same reasons. Reflecting some of his comments, the ordinances that have been passed by several communities under heavy union pressure in fact verge on being illegal and without question, exclusionary. Any politically correct union official will undoubtedly deny that the regulations exempt anyone from participation even though the ordinances are always lobbied for and backed by all the affiliated Locals. The truth remains that small non-union companies cannot comply with the REO even though they may be DCAM certified for specific projects. In the case of the Fogg Library, there are several roofing contractors located within 20 miles of this project that are more than qualified to complete the work but will never bid because of the REO.

Temper Your Applause

The Weymouth Town Council, as recommended by the Preservation Committee, recently approved the purchase of a tract of land located on the banks of the Back River, immediately adjacent to the Abigail Adams State Park. The Special Meeting was called strictly for the purpose of addressing any concerns residents might have had about the land purchase. There was a turnout of approximately 25 people who all appeared to be in favor of the Preservation Committee’s recommendation, some even commenting how this would have made the late Mary Toomey, who was instrumental in the protection of the Back River, very happy. There were several rounds of applause as residents and Council Members commented and finally approved the purchase.

Fundraising At The Ninety Nine

I'm confused! Nothing new. Here's the question for you fundraising at the liquor store experts. Today, students replete with their Weymouth garb, are having a car wash at the Ninety-Nine Restaurant on Route 18. Now we've seen this before. No big deal, right? Sometimes, the girls have bathing suits on. Sometimes the guys have their shirts off. They wave signs at the cars whizzing by and jump up and down to avert drivers to see them. It's all good, as they say, because they're trying to attract attention to raise money for their cause. There's no danger here, right? The school committee, the Superintendent, the Mayor, signed off on this, right? They can't get hit by a car, right? The manager can't slip a drink to a girl in a bikini, right? But let's keep them away from the Packy, because that will contribute to their deliquency.

I'm still confused. Nothing new.

Weymouth News Rebuttal

Last week, the Weymouth News came out with an editorial to “Can Canning In Front Of Liquor Stores”. The article basically sided with the minority of people who feel that town government should set restrictions on how parents raise their children, which is the hidden issue in the discussion of fundraising at liquor stores. One of our Wahey Boys, submitted a rebuttal that he had hoped would be printed this week but it conveniently missed the print deadline even though the canning policy had already lost. Interesting that this newspaper prints articles on old national topics such as Bush-Cheney labeled “Free Speech” but ignores controversial local topics such as this. Regardless, we’ve printed it here on www.waheyboys.com because we’re FREE to do so.

The Politics Of Addiction

Several years ago, two ten year old boys walked to the Stella Tirrell Park to play catch and maybe get to watch a Cranberry League baseball game. They were budding baseball stars themselves and loved to watch the older guys play and maybe pick up some pointers. They weren’t supervised by any adult, which was not unusual, because there were plenty of people around watching the game and Stella Tirrell was a safe place to play. Their game of catch was interrupted by an older boy, maybe sixteen, who asked if they were interested in trying some “pot”. One boy immediately refused, while the other more “adventurous” boy actually seemed intrigued by the offer. The “smarter” boy won out, despite the 16 year old’s persistence and the boys left.
