Soupy

I was never a Soupy Sales fan so I didn't take much notice when he passed away recently. I came across this essay by someone who is a fan. The article isn't so much about Soupy as it is about a couple of other things, 1) how times have changed for the worse when it comes to over protectiveness, and 2) how random acts of kindness can have a lasting effect on a person.

Roofing 9-11

It was a beautiful day in downtown Boston, Bowdoin Square to be exact. The building was now called the Verizon Building, which housed offices and communication systems. It had previously been one of the original Sears Roebuck buildings that was eventually closed and sold. It had, I think, about 15 floors and we were at the very top stripping off the roof and installing a new one.

A crowd forms at the Middle Street overpass on Route 3, waiting for Ted Kennedy's last ride through Weymouth.

Death Penalty Candidates

The Wahey circuit has been slow lately mostly due to local government taking time off for the summer. We usually stay away from the national picture unless it has to due with things that specifically affect us. One of our conservative friends, who likes to keep us informed, and enlighten Mr. Left, recently sent us a link regarding a story out of Tennessee. No matter how you feel about the death penalty or racial equality when you click on the links I'm sure it will make you bristle and either strengthen or cause reconsideration of your views. We'll let you be the judge.

Old Enough To Strip

I found it quite perplexing that the Patriot Ledger's articles recently, regarding an underage rock band playing at a venue that serves alcohol, received more comments than some of their reports on important issues such as health care. It makes you wonder what the mind-set of America is. Down in Atlanta they recently passed an ordinance preventing anyone under the age of 21 from entering an establishment that serves alcohol. I guess that would take care of underage rock-stars,or maybe not. There is no law preventing persons under 21 from working in these places. Now a group of young strippers are suing because they are being prevented from doing their jobs.

Aren't there more important things to worry about?

Honor Among Enemies

Look carefully at the B-17 and note how shot up it is - one engine dead, tail, horizontal stabilizer and nose shot up.. It was ready to fall out of the sky. (This is a painting done by an artist from the description of both pilots many years later.) Then realize that there is a German ME-109 fighter flying next to it. Now go to the link below and read the story. I think you'll be surprised.....

The American Flag In Texas

I was feeling proud of myself this past weekend. I was up early and attended a couple of Memorial Day ceremonies at a World War II and Korean War memorial and then went to the parade in Weymouth. I even stayed for the ceremony afterwards at the Ralph Talbot Amphitheater adjacent to the Weymouth Town Hall. The weather was perfect and although I thought the turnout was weak for such a beautiful day there were plenty of people in attendence. Afterwards, I visited my grandparents graves and noticed quite a few other people attending to grave sites and some just sitting and remembering. It felt good to see that so many Americans realize the importance of Memorial Day.

Who Cares?

It was reported recently that the Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy had decided to drop the name “Crusaders” for the more politically correct “Lions” as a team mascot name.

Average White Guy

Have you ever gone looking for a job at a company that advertises themselves as being an Equal Opportunity Employer? Is there an organization out there that actually checks this and enforces it? Where are these guys and what's their number?

So, You Want To Drive A Trolley?

I sat down with my 20 year old son last night to discuss a whole litany of important subjects none of which need to be delved into here. Throughout the first twenty or so minutes of our conversation his cell phone had interrupted us no less than six times until finally, with remarkable restraint, I removed it from the equation.

The Dog Peed On The Floor

Because there’s no more newspaper. Where did it go? It has gone the way of the Ivory-Billed Woodpecker.

Well, not yet, but close. As the Boston Globe struggles to survive while other newspapers around the country are failing, the under-age-40 generation (I’m guessing) is saying, “so what”.

It appears that down in Cape Pablo, you know, on the other side of the Canal, they’ve been spending a little too much time at the beach; and not enough time in Pab’s math class (yes, just math, no trigonometry required).

Maersk Alabama

This was forwarded to us from a Maritime Wahey Boy. It is a correspondence from a member of the crew of the Maersk Alabama that is circulating through the Maritime community. It reflects the circumstances and decision-making that transpired during the Pirating of the ship and subsequent hostage taking. It has not been edited.
