Another Opinion On Basta Bar

In response to the recent article regarding the 11 year old Barroom Heroes (and what's with that name?) playing at Bastas, it's hard to know who sounds more misguided, the owner, obviously seeking to groom future patrons, or the parents of the children, apparently seeking some sort of twisted American Idol moment.. In order to avoid being adults and telling these kids, "No!," in the first place, they instead compare the historically notorious Basta's to family restaraunts, Fenway Park, and weddings. No wedding or ballgame I've been to recently has a stripper pole on the dance floor, half naked bartenders (not that there's anything wrong with that), or booze-filled "shot machines" at the bar to promote alcohol abuse. Snap out of it, people, and let the kids rock out at a more suitable venue.

Well Har, I guess we'll agree to disagree on this one. I in fact went to the Basta Bar last night to see Barroom Heroes, as well as a slightly more "mature" band of 13 year olds called Chaulk Dust. Is that name a little more in line with your rightist views? You'll also be happy to know that the "stripper pole" (I was wondering what that was) was moved aside to make way for the large crowd and there was no alcohol served. The Weymouth Police even stopped by to make sure the kids were going to be home and in bed at a decent hour. As I looked around at all the soda and pizza being consumed, I'm sure that the Bar's owner was happy with the result as well. I doubt that he would have seen as much of a profit on a typical Wednesday night. The show wrapped up around 8:30 p.m. so I brought my kids down to the Sand Trap for some pig's feet.

LOL, as one of the mom's of 2 of the BarRoom Heroes I think the whole thing is hilarious, now not then. We all have the right to agree to disagree as well as having ones own decision. I just found this and am amazed at people's views still. Until you see the passion of these kids in action you just can't get it. The have now written 3 songs with 2 more in the works. They practice 3 to 4 times a week by choice together and every day on their own. This not something we are choosing for them and as far as just saying "no" what does that mean. These kids are passionate and well rounded. My two love guitar, play a sport a season and get good grades. We don't own a game boy or gizmos, they play outside. They are keeping busy and out of trouble and also have now had alot of their friends pick up an instrument. You either get it or you dont. If they chose to drop this all tomorrow I'd be thrilled. There is no $ to be made but the family time and the joy that has come out have been incredible. There are 3 families fully committed, driving, support etc. They were not in the bar they were in the resteraunt it was a Wed not a Thurs, Fri or Sat. All supervised and supported not only by parents but grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends and even teachers. The focus on the alcohol is ridiculous. The point to be made is there is no where alcohol is not served. Molly Syris has the alcohol shut off when she plays? Do any of the musicians? I have the best kids in the world and are proud of them in every way shape and form. Thanks to all of those that have shown and GET IT!
