Don't Wave At Children
I came across this story and it reminded me of an incident involving our own Wahey Boy, Vic, that occurred just about a month ago. The events are eerily similar and we're hoping that this isn't some over-the-top trend by law enforcement. In this case the Royal Canadian Mounted Police actually took an elderly couple into custody for waving hello to a child.
Vic was on his way to visit a fellow worker that had been sick and laid up at home for a time. He wasn't entirely familiar with the Hanson, Mass. neighborhood where his friend lived and ended up on the wrong street (to say the least). As he was backing up to turn around, a young girl about 8 years old, came down the street on a bike and Vic, naturally stopped and waved the girl on, watching her to be sure she was well beyond safe passage before continuing on his way.
Shortly thereafter he arrived at his friends house but his visit was quickly interrupted by a swarm of police. He was asked to step outside and was interrogated, rather rudely, for approximately 30 minutes before finally being let go. The most bothersome part of the whole scary incident, according to Vic, was the assumption by police that he was guilty.
It appears the child went home and told her parents that someone tried to abduct her.
There are quite a few sad lessons to be learned here. Go right home after work. Don't visit sick friends. Don't wave at children. Be rude whenever possible. Assume guilt before innocence.
It makes you wonder whether the "attempted" abductions that we hear about actually are that at all, or whether it's just overly cautious police, parents and children being stupid.
